Stand Up for Autism Step Up for Pragnya

A Quick Update

On March 16, 2020, six Bay Area counties ordered residents to stay home, except for essential work or outings due to the novel coronavirus. We initially thought the shelter-in-place order would last for a couple of weeks. We all went around compiling supplies to last until the end of March, and rescheduled our events and session to April, and hoped to return to school in time for graduation.

A month later, the entire Bay Area is still sheltering in place. We now see people line up entering grocery stores and stand behind tape markings on the floor (6 feet apart) at the checkout.

Celebrations and social engagements have transformed into online Zoom parties with virtual backgrounds. Going outside has become a luxury, and entering our homes involves a tedious disinfecting process. We are settling into our daily routines, but the definition of "NORMAL LIFE" has drastically changed.

Impact on Families and Individuals

For individuals and families who have been diagnosed with autism, school closures and stay-at-home orders have brought with them a unique set of challenges. Individuals on the spectrum tend to thrive on routines, structure and “social practice,” which makes this time extremely challenging for them.

The New Normal

So, we at PRAGNYA decided to adapt and move our super successful annual dance event StepUp for PRAGNYA to the ONLINE world, to show our love and support to our friends on the Autism Spectrum who are part of PRAGNYA family. Individuals on the Autism spectrum need our love, our support, our understanding and compassion, NOT sympathy or Apathy.

Sign up for our StepUp for Pragnya dance challenge if you believe that everybody needs to belong, you can participate as:

  • a Solo performer

  • a Family (Mom, Dad, brother, sister, uncle aunt or grand parents)

  • a Group (friends from the neighborhood or school)

All you do is fill in the registration below and send us a 2min video of your performance. This video will be posted online on Pragnya's facebook page.

Please be aware

Proceeds from this event go to PRAGNYA for funding expansion of the program to include more children & activities for them.

This effort is entirely student run, with minimal adult intervention. We want to be the voice giving power to other students' voices.
