What is an Ally?

According to Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language, an ally is someone “joined with another for a common purpose.”

Being an Ally with PRAGNYA for Neurodiversity is the process of working to develop individual attitudes, institutions, and culture in which Neurodiverse individuals feel they are valued and feel welcome into the mainstream. This work is motivated by an enlightened self-interest to raise awareness and acceptance for Neurodiverse individuals. An ally is a person who works both to facilitate the development of all students around issues of learning and to improve the experience of Neurodiverse individuals.

An Ally for Pragnya...

  • Believes that it is in their self-interest to be an ally to Neurodiverse individuals.

  • Has worked to develop an understanding of issues Neurodiverse individuals face.

  • Works to understand how patterns of oppression operate, and is willing to identify oppressive acts and challenge the oppressive behaviors of others.

  • As an ally you are publicly acknowledging your support for Neurodiverse individuals and the issues and challenges they face.

  • Chooses to align with Neurodiverse individuals, and represents their needs — especially when they are unable to do so themselves.

  • Promotes a sense of community involving and embracing individuals with autism, and teaches others about the importance of these communities. Encourages others to also provide advocacy.
