The California state government has recently unveiled its "May Revision" to the budget, detailing the state's revised spending plans. This update contains significant information that might impact the Self-Determination Program (SDP). At Pragnya, we recognize that budget changes can be worrisome, and we aim to ensure that you and the many families already leading a self-determined life are informed about these developments and their potential implications for your involvement in the SDP.
What's Going On?
The state is projecting lower revenue than initially expected over the next couple of years due to economic uncertainties. As a result, the state is looking at ways to reduce spending. While the state plans to continue serving more people through regional centers, some proposed changes could affect how services are provided.
What This Means for the Self-Determination Program
Here's what the budget proposal says about the Self-Determination Program:
Protecting Core Services:Â The state has stated its intention to protect the basic services and supports that people are entitled to under the Lanterman Act, which ensures that people with developmental disabilities receive the necessary support.
"Guardrails" for SDP:Â The state is proposing "new guardrails" to ensure the SDP is financially sustainable. This is a key area of attention. While the term "protect" is used, these guardrails could introduce new rules or limits to the program to control costs. It's currently unclear what these guardrails will entail, but they might affect:
How budgets are approved
How you can use your SDP funds
The level of oversight
Other Changes:Â The budget also proposes changes to how service providers are paid and how people get assistance with health and safety waiver applications. These changes could indirectly affect the services available to you.
What You Can Do
Pragnya is committed to supporting you through these potential changes. Here's what you can do:
Stay Informed:Â This is a proposal, and the state legislature will be discussing and making revisions. We will keep you updated on any significant developments.
